Dawn was still an hour away when the two bleary-eyed volunteers began their day.
In many ways, they had the best of the jobs…they got to drive the route just as the sun was rising. Everyone
had hoped for a beautiful, sunny day, but hurricane Rita had made landfall only a few hours before. As the sun rose,
the drinks were iced and preparing for the riders, the two early birds were driving the route and the wind was rolling in.

The route should have been close to perfect – east from Plano to Nevada, north and west to Blue Ridge to a very quaint
square with a gazebo. Then, on to Celina, another square, another gazebo and then back to McKinney – through some
beautiful neighborhoods. There was plenty of open road, beautiful country, even a view of the Frognot tower. But, the wind
was too rough for many people and concerns had reached all the way to Dallas that there would be problems with groceries,
water, electricity and gasoline.

However, for the riders, volunteers and others who braved the day, it was a wonderful event.
The band played well, the food at Hank’s was great, Plano Honda was a great beginning to the day. The dealers made even
a bad hand fun and the stops were manned with gracious, although wind-blown volunteers. Everyone loved the prizes - $500
for first place, $250 for second and $150 for third. There were great door prizes and even a prize for the ‘worst hand’ of a leather
jacket and a $50.00 gas card. Once all the prizes were awarded and the thank-yous were made, the bleary-eyed volunteers who
started the day before dawn headed for home. Even though the turnout was low, it was a great day filled with fun and tomorrow
the planning for next year began.
